Do you want to show excerpt of WordPress posts on the blog page of your website? Most of the WordPress themes come with the inbuilt feature to show the excerpt of your posts and pages instead of the whole content.
If you are using the theme which shows the full content then you can add the read more button manually.
Are you thinking about adding WordPress post excerpt on page? Well, it is similar to the post. You can do that from your admin panel only.
How To Show Excerpt of WordPress Posts Instead of Whole Content
You readers won’t like it to see the full post on your blog page. It’s because they won’t be able to see any other post. They have to scroll down and down. It would annoy them.
It’s always important for a blogger to think about the better user experience. While handling a website, you should try to build a better blog which can provide a better user-friendly environment.
You can set the no. of posts to display on your blog page from the WordPress admin panel. But if you don’t set the excerpt then your readers see the full content posts.
Add WordPress Post Excerpt On Page And Other Post Types.
1. In the WordPress post editor, you may have noticed many options to craft your blog post properly. You can make the hyperlinks, add headings and more.
You can add the post excerpt then by clicking on the read more button after a few lines. It’s your choice whether you want to show the read more button after two lines or more. Place the cursor after the word after which you want to add the read more buttons and click on the button shown above.
2. Add custom WordPress post excerpt on page and post
You may have seen above in the post editor the “screen options” button. Just click on that and you would see many checkboxes to click on. Find the excerpt option and click on that.
It would show a custom excerpt box below your post editor and you can add the custom excerpt. Instead of adding the starting lines of your WordPress blog post, you can add anything here to show before the read more button.
The excerpt you add would show on your blog page where the list of the blog posts will be showing. It would provide the way to read to your full content of the post.
If you WordPress is inbuilt with the feature to show excerpt of post WordPress then you don’t need to worry about adding it manually. WordPress will automatically pick the default excerpt type.
Do You Add WordPress Post Excerpt On Page And Articles Manually
I have noticed that a few developers don’t add the excerpt option in their theme to give the freedom to their readers to choose their own excerpt. You can add the custom excerpt which can be helpful because you can add the summary of the post which can help your readers to have an idea.
The simplest thing is to add the read more button from the WordPress post editor. Just click on the button after the desired line. But remember, WordPress won’t pick up more lines than the default. If you are still asking how to add read more in WordPress then let feel free to ask.

Hi bro,
Showing blog posts in excerpts with read more links ensures optimum use of website homepage. I don’t know for others, but for me it shows some level of professionalism. I have this feature enabled in my blog too.
Have a nice day!
Hey Sherab,
There are many people who use the custom excerpt. If you add the read more button then WordPress will automatically pickup the words. If you leave it as it is then the structure of the content would alter.
Thanks for taking time to share your thoughts.
Have a wonderful day.

Hello Ravi,
Yes, many theme (especially the free ones) don’t come with post excerpt. Your post will definitely help bloggers who want to add excerpt to their blog.
I am using the Genesis theme so it comes with it, and no, i don’t do it manually.
Aside the way you mentioned above, WordPress do have an excerpt setting in your WordPress dashboard that can force any blog that don’t it inbuilt to show an excerpt of your post.
Your tutorial is easy to understand… do have a great week ahead…
Hey Babanature,
Most of the newbies don’t look upon these themes when they choose the theme for their blog. If the theme is enabled with the excerpt showing feature then we don’t need to add it manually.
Nowadays, developers are improving the themes for providing the better user experience.
Thanks for stopping by.
Enjoy the day.

Great post Ravi,
And like BabaNature said, this will certainly help a lot of people who are using one of these free themes.
But, I honestly don’t really understand why anyone would go for a free theme today when there a lot of insanely and good premium WordPress themes out there on the internet, even though a lot of people obviously will not be able to afford premium themes, but anyone who can not afford $19 to get a theme, I doubt if he can really succeed at blogging.
Moreover, you can always find a friend who can share his own premium theme with you if you’re so broke that you can’t afford one. It’s all about building relationships with other bloggers.
That being said, I’m very sure this post will be very helpful to a lot of people, especially those new bloggers.
Thanks for sharing man.
