How to install a WordPress theme? A question asked by most of the bloggers who enter in the blogosphere. It’s basically the doubt of bloggers who switch to WordPress.
Many bloggers may be thinking as this is really simple so what is the need to write this. In my opinion, for newbies every new thing is difficult.
Every blogger once a beginner. To install a theme beginners need to know about it and I am going to provide the simple guide for them.
Install A Theme With The Simple Guide
Now the question arises that what kind of themes we are talking about? Let me tell you that there are some free themes and some premium themes which can be installed to your WordPress blog.
Free Themes: – There are many free WordPress Themes present in WordPress.org directory from where you can install any WordPress theme. There are some easy steps to follow by which you can install any free WordPress theme.
Step 1 : – The initial step you have to take is to take a look at your WordPress dashboard where you can easily see an option appearance->themes. Now a new screen appears in front of you where you can see some default WordPress themes which can be installed by you. But if you want to get any new WordPress theme from the directory then click to “Add New“.
Step 2 : – Now a new screen comes in front of our eyes and you can see many options including the colors, lightening etc. You can write the name of the theme if you already know the name of the theme.
But for beginners, it’s hard to know the name of such themes. You can search the themes using the tags by clicking to any of the options from the list shown to you and finally click to “Find Themes” and you will be displayed with many free themes.
Step 3: – If you want to install any theme then you can see the option to install a theme. You just need to click on “install theme”. There is an option of “Live Preview” by which you can see your blog how it will look like when you install that theme.
Step 4: – The last step to install a theme consists the selection to activate theme when a new screen appears in front of you which contain the query to activate the theme or to return to the theme installer page. You just need to click on the option after which your free WordPress theme will be installed for your blog.
You have successfully installed the theme. But here is one thing to remember is that bloggers who use WordPress.com (fully-hosted) can’t install these free themes. These themes can be installed only by WordPress.org (self-hosted) users.
Premium Themes: – As I have mentioned that there are many WordPress themes which are premium. You can get these themes from StudioPress, WPZOOM, Elegant Themes and many else. There are many Thesis and Genesis themes which you can buy.
You should take the license key for these themes. To install such themes there is not any other method, the only difference is that you have to upload the .zip file which you download from any premium themes distributor.
Here are some required steps.
Step 1 :- You have to do like you do when we install free WordPress themes. Just go to appearance->themes->add new. The only difference is that here you have to upload the .zip file by clicking to “upload” from the options shown after clicking to “Add New“.
Step 2 :- A new screen appears and you just need to choose the .zip file from your computer where you have the downloaded theme in .zip form. After choosing click to “install now” and within few minutes, your theme will be uploaded.
Step 3 :- Again you will be asked to activate the theme or to return to the theme installer. You should activate the theme.
WordPress Theme Has Been Installed
After the completion of the simple steps explained in the post, your WordPress theme will be installed successfully. Now the question – “how to install a WordPress theme” has the answer.

Hi Ravi,
My first time here. WordPress is a great platform to start a blog, I am using it for my own. You have provided a complete installation guide that I believe many starter will find it easy and useful.
Thanks for sharing it. Wish you have a great weekend

Hi Ravi,
You’ve shared a very important tutorial, most especially for newbies. one more thing I’d love to add is that it is not safe to leave any unused theme inside the dashboard. This causes security loophole, so it you are not using any theme, instead of being idle, it should be removed.
Thanks for sharing
james
Hey James,
Ya James we should remove extra themes from our WordPress dashboard.
Thanks for visiting.
Have a good day.:)

Hi Ravi
Great to see such a comprehensive guide. It’s easy to forget that some of the things we now find easy were once difficult to us – and will still be difficult to newcomers.
I would like to remind people to look for a Responsive theme (to be viewable on mobile devices). When I first started out I didn’t even know what one was and picked a theme that wasn’t responsive – so having got it looking nice, I had to start all over again with a new theme!

Hi Joy,
For newbies it’s hard to install a new theme and to choose any theme which is good for their blog.
Thanks for being here.
Enjoy the weekend.:)

Hi Ravi,
I oftentimes forget just how much I do know now and to me this is so easy to do but not to someone who has never done this before and are afraid they might break something.
Your instructions were spot on, great job of explaining how to upload free or paid themes. I would think that anyone would be able to do this now.

Hi Adrienne,
For experienced people like you installing a theme is not a big deal but you for beginners this easy task seems to be hard.
I hope this post will help them.
Hope you are enjoying your weekend.:)

Hey Ravi,
You made a valid point at the beginning of this post. There are some bloggers that think this would be simple to do to install a theme, but there are a lot of people who are just getting into the blogosphere that don’t have a clue to how to do it. They could pay someone to do it, but it would be better for them to learn how to do it themselves and they can invest that money in other needs.
This was a great step by step tutorial on how to install a Theme. Plus you made it simple enough for anyone to do it! That’s what it’s all about! Thanks for sharing and I hope you’re having a great week!
Hey Sherman,
For beginners every new thing is different and they need simple guide to follow.
Installing a theme seems a joke to bloggers who are well experienced but for newbies it’s really worthy to know the method.
Thanks for visiting.
You too have an awesome weekend.:)
