How Much Money Do You Need to Start a WordPress Blog

One of the biggest things to know as if how much money do you need to start a WordPress blog. People start their blog but most of them get confused.

It’s because they don’t really get an idea about the money they need to spend to have a blog they desire.

In the past few years, I have helped many people and they have asked the same question. There are thousands of guides to start a WordPress blog but not every guide clears the concept of money required.

In this article, I am going to walk you through the different kind of blogs/website which can be built using WordPress depending on the resources you can use.

What’s Required to Start Your Own WordPress Blog

Before you jump to WordPress installation, you should understand the difference between the self-hosted WordPress version and the fully hosted version.

Read the comparison of WordPress.org vs WordPress.com.

As of now, you should know that WordPress is a content management system or you can say a software which is free.

So why do people say you need to spend money for having a WordPress blog?

Well, there are many other things which are paid. Let me mention a few.

  1. Domain Name
  2. Web Hosting
  3. Website Design ( Themes )
  4. Plugins

To have an identity of your blog/website, you have to buy a domain name. The name which will be signifying the place to which people can visit and read the content.

It’s the name of your blog.

It’s the address to which people will open your blog. For example : – ( www.facebook.com, www.google.com, www.blogginglove.com )

Then comes the web hosting or the place on the internet where the data of your website will be placed. Every website requires a space to host their data and that’s what a web hosting does.

After that, the design of your website is required. You can’t just run a plain website, right?

There are many free WordPress themes available in its repository which can be used to start your own blog. But if you need something beautiful then either you buy any premium theme from any other company or hire a web designer to have a custom website design.

The next you need to install a few WordPress plugins to add functionalities to your WordPress blog.

There are thousands of free plugins present in the WordPress directory but for a few extra features, you may need to pay or buy directly any premium plugin.

These are the four things which will decide how much money do you need to start a WordPress blog.

Let’s Start Calculating the Money Required for Different Types of Websites

Depending on the type and your design requirements, the budget of starting a WordPress blog will vary.

Let us divide into the two different categories.

  1. Low budget ( $100 to $1000 )
  2. Big Budget ( $1000 to $10000+ )

Your requirements will decide the cost of a blog. You can start your blog in just $100 and it can reach to $10000 or even more than that.

Depending on your niche, the content, the cost of the web hosting and other resources get increased.

The cost of the domain name remains the same for all the blogs. It’s just the web hosting, website design and the plugins which add extra charges.

Building a Low Budget WordPress Blog

To start a 5-page blog, you would need to buy a domain name which cost between $10 to $15 per year. As mentioned earlier, it’s the same on every blog.

Then you would need to buy a reliable web hosting. There are many web hosting companies which provide one domain name for free for one year.

It’s very important to have a web hosting which is good enough to handle the traffic and provide the best customer service. We recommend Bluehost, InmotionHosting, and Siteground.

You can get 60% off on Bluehost and Inmotionhosting is also providing an amazing offer.

These three are the reputed web hosting companies which are perfect for starting your own WordPress blog. If you want the proper discount on Inmotionhosting, you can directly contact us.

It’s recommended to buy the middle plan of each of the hosting which wouldn’t cost you more than $7 per month.

Many people even buying the starting plan which is between $2.95 to $3.99 per month.

So the cost of the web hosting wouldn’t be higher than $60 per year.

And now you need to have a WordPress theme which is good enough for your blog. You can buy any premium theme between $29 to $99.

And if you want the design of your own choice, you can hire a web designer who can provide you everything you need.

You can contact us for that.

A 5-page website would cost below $1000. So how much money do you need to start a WordPress blog (low budget)?

  • Domain Name = $10 – $15
  • Web Hosting = $60
  • Website Design = $300 to $800
  • Plugins = $0 to $100

The total money wouldn’t increase $1000. Let me tell you that you can easily run a perfect blog without any premium plugin.

And if you don’t want a custom design then it would be around $100 only.

Though to have a professional blog, it’s always recommended to either buy a premium theme or have a beautiful custom design which makes you and your readers happy.

How Much Money Do You Need to Start a WordPress Blog (High Budget)

If you’re planning to build something big then you have to have a bigger budget. Suppose you want to start a blog to sell your products then it would need a better web hosting plan.

And the design of that blog would also be costly because you wouldn’t need any built-in theme to use.

If you’re spending that much money then you should definitely have a custom design which looks the way you desire.

The cost of the domain name would be the same.

But your web hosting plan will be bigger than before. You can buy a plan which can handle 100000 visitors per month.

Such type of plan is required if you’re planning to build a company website or an e-commerce website.

InmotionHosting and Siteground are always recommended. It would cost you between $8 to $12 per month.

Depending on your website’s size, you may also require a managed web hosting. And WPEngine is one of the best companies for that.

For managed hosting, you have to pay $24 per month for 25000 visitors per month and $99 per month for a 100000 per month plan. Such type of plan is required when you create an e-commerce website with thousands of products.

That would be a heavy budget.

And the custom design for such website can go from $2000 to $20000 depending on the number of pages and the products.

For such website, you would require some premium plugins which can enhance the website functionality. You may also need a CDN.

And for an e-commerce website, you also need an SSL certificate to assure your customers.

So what’s the total?

  1. Domain Name = $10 to $15
  2. Web Hosting = $250 to $1200
  3. Website Design = $2000 to $20000
  4. Plugins = $500

WordPress is capable of more than you think. You can build any kind of website you want. I have just given you an idea of the cost.

You can start a blog in only $100 and can spend $100000 depending on your requirements.

  1. Hi Ravi, very interesting article. I started for FREE and now have really pumped it up the past year. You can spend a lot more too on services like having someone do your technical work or creative work. I had to outsource in order to generate more content and to be active on the social networks at the same time.
They say time is money and so it’s true! You have to pick and choose along the way.

    1. Hey Lisa,

You can spend as much you can on a blog. I have saved a lot because I ake care of the technical things including the design. The only person I require is someone who handles the blog posts.
But hiring someone is always an added cost.

  2. Hi Ravi,

    Happy Monday ?

Informative post! Yes, you are right about all that you mentioned, especially the rates to start a blog, because they vary a LOT, and it all depends on you – how much you are willing to spend, isn’t it?

Honestly speaking, for new bloggers, it is a good option to remain low budget and once they try and test the waters, and are sure they wish to pursue blogging, then go ahead and invest more I guess. Speaking of myself, we did the same and for years we never bought anything at all – not even the premium plugins and we did pretty well.

Thanks for sharing. Have a nice week ahead ?

    1. Hey Harleena,

You’re right. Newbies should try a few months with any of the free platforms as most of them give up within a short time. I started directly with self-hosted WordPress version but didn’t spend many because I took care of everything on my own.
But I have used every single platform just to let my readers know about the experience.
      Thanks for your input.

  3. Hey Ravi,

How have you been doing buddy?

Cost of my blog has been increasing, and I knew that this was bound to happen since I started investing in premium WP managed hosting from Flywheel, Drip email automation, SumoMe, and a few other tools like that.

I think I am spending about $1200 or so each year in total. If you calculate my time spent on writing, promoting, and everything else we normally do, that cost goes up significantly.

  4. Hello, Ravi Sir.

A Nice informative blog post like always. Well, when we started 3nions the total cost of domain and monthly hosting was ₹250 which we paid from our pocket money 2 years ago. Our investment in blogging was found to be the most profitable among all.

Currently, we are investing more in web hosting and site security as it is utmost important. For intermediates, Managed WordPress hosting is a good fit.

    Thanks for sharing!

    Regards,
    Prakhar.

    1. Hey Prakhar,

Your decision was perfect to start a new venture. I started mine by spending a few Dollars on the web hosting and then never looked back. The more you invest, the more you get the results.

Having a managed hosting is good for the people don’t have any technical knowledge and it takes care of many other aspects.
      Thanks for sharing your journey.

  5. Hi Ravi,

    Valuable Information!

Thanks for the summing up things. I’m sure this will be very helpful to bloggers who are starting out.

It’s always useful hearing about the process of setting up your own site, project or company. It’s become increasingly popular for people to branch out into their own individual projects – whether they’re a fun side business or a full-time profession.

Thankfully, there’s a lot of great programs and tools now in place to make this more possible and easier than ever!

    I will tweet your post.

    Thanks a lot for sharing.

  6. Hello, Ravi!

That’s so right-on-point cost you said!

Yes, it shouldn’t cost less than US$ 100.00 per year but if you have the budget, you can spend endlessly.

But that does not mean you’ll get just an average-looking blog with US$ 100.00

It will be as effective and as professional-looking as you can imagine.

So, that’s the best price one can invest in a minimum form to get a blog kicking the internet!

    Nice one! ?

    ~ Adeel

  7. Hi Ravi,

Interesting research. It’s true that there’s no fixed value to start a blog. It depends on what kind of blog you want, how much you want to work, and what skills you acquire.

I started blogging for free with the help of Blogger and later bought a domain name. Eventually, I migrated to WordPress and I’ve spent good amount till now to run my blog.

    Thanks for sharing this guide.
